New Permanent Representative of Peru to the OAS Presented Credentials

  December 17, 2013

The new Permanent Representative of Peru to the Organization of American States (OAS), Juan Federico Jiménez Mayor, today presented the credentials that accredit him to the hemispheric institution.

The Assistant Secretary General of the OAS, Albert Ramdin, who received the credentials on behalf of the Secretary General, José Miguel Insulza, highlighted the relationship of Peru with the Organization, evidenced at this time by the rapidity with which a successor to Ambassador Walter Albán, former Permanent Representative to the OAS and current Interior Minister of Peru, was appointed. “Your designation, a few days prior to the departure of Ambassador Walter Albán, is a clear signal of the commitment of President Ollanta Humala’s government and the people he represents to the principles of the OAS,” he said during a ceremony held at the headquarters of the Organization in Washington, DC.

Ambassador Ramdin highlighted the public service experience of the new representative of Peru, who was President of the Council of Ministers and Minister of Justice and Human Rights in his country. Your knowledge "is without a doubt a guarantee that you will be very successful in carrying out the responsibilities of the position for which you present your credentials to the OAS."

The OAS Assistant Secretary General underlined particularly the experience that Ambassador Jiménez has acquired on issues related to the reform and modernization of the State, which "will be of great help to the Working Group of the Permanent Council charged with the task of evaluating the strategic vision of the OAS, as well as during discussions on the Organization’s budget." He also stressed the knowledge of Ambassador Jiménez on security, human rights, and integral development.

For his part, Ambassador Jiménez emphasized the momentum of the Peruvian economy and argued that social inclusion policies promoted by the government of Peru "are creating significant results to improve social equity and the living conditions of Peruvians." "This main aspect of our government policies generates much interest in order to promote at the OAS a social agenda, which will allow for the growth process that Latin America has been experiencing to be also used to improve equity, because unfortunately our region has many inequities."

Ambassador Jiménez expressed interest in working to "create the best conditions so that human rights can be effectively present in our countries." The Peruvian diplomat also said that he will focus on concerns related to "effectively dealing with the issue of crime," and social conflict, because "there can’t be economic growth if the social conditions in our countries do not improve, and in this regard, Peru would bring to the Organization and the countries its experience in these core issues."

Ambassador Jiménez resumes, on behalf of Peru, the chairmanship of the Permanent Council that Ambassador Albán had left. The vice chairmanship will return to Antigua and Barbuda, which held the chairmanship temporarily in the absence of a Permanent Representative of Peru.
