The OAS to Observe the Elections in Ecuador

  December 14, 2012

The Organization of American States (OAS), in response to an invitation by the National Electoral Council of the Republic of Ecuador, has decided to send an Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) that will begin its activities next January and will accompany the election process leading up to the Presidential and Legislative Elections to be held on February 17, 2013.

To this end, the Secretary General of the OAS, José Miguel Insulza, appointed Dr. Rafael Alburquerque as the Chief of Mission. Dr. Alburquerque was Vice President of the Dominican Republic between 2004 and 2012. He also served as Secretary of Labor from 1991 to 2000, and was a member of the Drafting Committee of the Labor Code and its regulations in 1992. He also represented his country on numerous occasions before the International Labour Organization and has co-authored important publications in the field of labor law.

For the general elections in February, the Mission plans to deploy observers in much of the territory of Ecuador, in order to learn about the development of the electoral administration and organization as well as the political proposals.
