Secretary General Insulza Suggests Reflection on Technical Secretariat of Defense Ministers Conference

  November 22, 2010

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, proposed today, during the IX Conference of Ministers of Defense of the Americas, being held in Santa Cruz (Bolivia), to open a debate on the possibility of the Inter-American Defense Board (IDB), an advisory body of the General Secretariat, being able to carry out functions as the permanent executive secretariat of the ministerial conference on defense.

Secretary General Insulza recalled that the OAS currently plays that technical role in the ministerial meetings of the Americas on education, justice, labor, the environment, energy, foreign affairs and public security. He held that, "the OAS being the House of the Americas, it makes sense and it feels natural that it host and facilitate meetings and coordinate the institutions of those States."

During today's schedule of sessions at the hemispheric meeting, the head of the OAS held bilateral meetings with ministers of defense from North, Central and South America who are participating in the event in Santa Cruz.
