OAS SECRETARY GENERAL MEETS WITH PRESIDENT-ELECT OF URUGUAY

  December 10, 2009

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, met on Wednesday in Montevideo with the President-elect of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, José Mujica, and with his Vice President, Danilo Astori. For over an hour, they discussed the challenges and opportunities the continent currently faces and the specific challenges for Uruguay.

“We had a very cordial meeting, characterized by frankness and a great constructive spirit. The President Elect shared with me his plans, proposals and ideas, and confirmed that Uruguay is enjoying a wonderful moment of economic and political stability, something that would be remarkable in any place in the world but especially in the current state of the global economy,” said Secretary General Insulza.

The head of the largest hemispheric body, who was accompanied at the meeting by John Biehl del Río, the OAS representative in Uruguay, encouraged the President-elect and all Uruguayans to preserve, and inasmuch as possible to strengthen, the favorable situation they enjoy.

“I think it is important to protect and strengthen the current economic and political stability and the goals achieved, and in this that all Uruguayans be united,” Insulza affirmed.

Secretary General Insulza was in Montevideo for the inauguration of a seminar organized by the OAS and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for the elaboration of a report on the situation of democracy in the region.
