China Makes Contribution to the OAS for Building Renovations

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today received from the Deputy Foreign Minister of the People's Republic of China, Zhang Kunsheng, a donation of $100,000 for the renovation of "The House of Americas," headquarters of the OAS in Washington, DC, which celebrated 100 years in 2010.

During the meeting at which the contribution was presented, the Chinese diplomat stressed that his country's relationship with the OAS has developed since it became a Permanent Observer in 2004, and indicated that collaboration between the two has increased since Secretary General Insulza assumed the leadership of the Organization. The senior Chinese official highlighted the role played by the Organization in the Hemisphere and the importance to his country of its relations with Latin America and the Caribbean.

For his part, the Secretary General expressed his gratitude for the contribution made towards the restoration of the building and "for all the support you have given to the OAS" over the past nine years, with contributions to finance areas such as "integral development, gender equality, trade and competitiveness, natural disaster mitigation, promotion of culture and sustainable development," among others.

He also noted that between 2009 and 2013 the Organization, through its Department of Scholarships, awarded 41 scholarships for undergraduate, masters and Chinese language studies. These grants were funded by China and had a wide acceptance in 29 member states, from which 379 applications were received.

Present at the meeting, which took place in the office of Secretary General Insulza, were the Secretary of External Relations of the OAS, Alfonso Quiñonez; the Director of the Department of International Affairs, Jorge Sanin; the Deputy Director General of the Department of Latin American and Caribbean Affairs the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Li Baoraong; and the alternate Observer of China to the OAS, Liang Yu.
