Fourth Model OAS General Assembly for Students in the Colombian Caribbean Concluded in Barranquilla
September 22, 2014
The Fourth Model General Assembly of the Organization of American States (MOAS) for students of the Colombian Caribbean concluded this weekend at the Universidad del Norte (Uninorte) in Barranquilla, Colombia. The event was attended by more than 320 students from educational institutions (high schools and universities) in Barranquilla, Bogota, Cali, Cartagena, Santa Marta, Riohacha and Valledupar, and was organized through a cooperation agreement between the OAS General Secretariat and Uninorte for the fourth consecutive year.
At the opening ceremony of the MOAS, on September 18, the Director of the Inter-American Children's Institute, Maria de los Dolores Aguilar said that the importance of this type of exercise "is centered in the respect for the opinions of others, which in turn is the basis for the construction of democracy." For her part, the Dean of the Division of Law, Political Science and International Relations of Uninorte, Silvia Gloria Vivo, welcomed participants urging students to "contribute with their ideas to build a better future for the Americas."
In this model, high school students discussed issues related to democracy and transparency; cyber security; integration and economic development; promotion of sustainable cities and the expansion of the Panama Canal. Around these issues 27 resolutions were developed as well as the Declaration of Barranquilla entitled "Hemispheric Commitment to prevent migration of children and young people as a result of conditions of vulnerability in their communities," which was prepared by a Special Working Group comprised of university students.
The MOAS Program for students of the Hemisphere aims to promote democratic values and the spread of knowledge about the work of the OAS among the youth of the Hemisphere. The next MOAS for high schools will be held at OAS headquarters in Washington, DC, on December 3-5, 2014, with participation open to all schools in the Americas. All the information about these models and other assemblies is available at http://www.oas.org/en/asg/moas/default.asp.
