OAS Secretary General Welcomes Decision by the Government of Panama and Calls for Dialogue to Attain Social Peace

  October 27, 2012

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, welcomed the initiative launched by the government of President Ricardo Martinelli to request the derogation of Law 72, "with the aim of ending the severe incidents that led to the death of three people in the city of Colón, Panamá, thereby creating space for a solution to the conflict, through inclusive and respectful mechanisms of dialogue."

Concerned by the violent clashes in recent days between citizens and police forces, Secretary General Insulza urged "everyone involved in the conflict to act with responsibility," and highlighted "the behavior of most Panamanians, who kept calm despite the incidents that disturbed the peace in some towns". He also acknowledged the attitude taken Friday by the National Assembly to "unify positions to reach agreements for the good of social peace."

Secretary General Insulza also expressed his condolences to the victims' families and condemned the crimes committed by small groups that, he said, "only make it more difficult to the find a way out of the serious situation the country has endured."
