OAS SECRETARY GENERAL CONGRATULATES THE GOVERNMENTS OF ECUADOR AND COLOMBIA FOR PROGRESS ACHIEVED IN THE NORMALIZATION OF THEIR RELATIONS

  November 13, 2009

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, congratulated the Governments of Ecuador and Colombia for naming the chargés d’affaires of the two countries and praised the leadership of the Presidents of Colombia, Álvaro Uribe, and of Ecuador, Rafael Correa, in the ongoing process of dialogue between their respective Foreign Ministers that has as its goal the normalization of relations between the two countries.

“The appointment of the chargés d’affaires of Ecuador and Colombia reflects the firm compromise of their respective governments to implement the Joint Statement signed by the two countries on September 24 in New York,” Insulza stated. “This important step, the result of the process of rapprochement undertaken by the Foreign Ministers of the two countries and their respective work teams, is a clear and hopeful example of dialogue as the only road to promote cooperation and find common ground on different points of view,” he said.

Insulza reiterated his strong personal and institutional support for the efforts of the ongoing dialogue, as well as his wish to continue to provide any assistance of support and facilitation that the Foreign Ministers of the two countries may ask of him in the search for agreements on sensitive matters.
