El Salvador Assumes Chairmanship in OAS Permanent Council

  October 1, 2010

The Permanent Representative of El Salvador to the Organization of American States (OAS), Joaquín Maza, today assumed the Chairmanship of the Permanent Council of the hemispheric institution during a ceremony that was held at the Organization’s headquarters in Washington, DC.

Upon receiving the gavel which represents the Council’s authority from the hands of his predecessor, the Permanent Representative of Ecuador, María Isabel Salvador, Ambassador Maza assured that his country has “always demonstrated its support for this Organization, a role that we have already begun fulfilling.”

The Permanent Council’s statutes establish that the chairmanship be commanded by each of the Permanent Representatives in turn, following the alphabetic order in Spanish of the names of their respective countries, and the office of Vice-Chair, by identical standards, following reverse alphabetical order.

The Assistant Secretary General of the OAS, Albert Ramdin, as well as the Permanent Representatives of the Bahamas, Belize, Brazil, Canada, United States, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Panama were all present at the ceremony.
