OAS SECRETARY GENERAL MEETS FOREIGN MINISTER OF BOLIVIA

  October 29, 2009

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, met Thursday with the Minister of Foreign Relations of Bolivia, Mr. David Choquehuanca Céspedes, in his office at OAS Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Secretary General Insulza and Foreign Minister Choquehuanca commented on current affairs in the hemisphere and in Bolivia, with particular stress on the steps being taken towards the general election of December 6th, where the President, Vice President and all Members of Parliament will be elected.

Minister Choquehuanca thanked the support of the OAS in developing a new biometric electoral registry, finished recently. The OAS has been frequently present in the country offering technical support and collaborating with the National Electoral Court (CNE) on issues of planning, implementation, logistics, follow-up, information security, social communication and mobilization.

At the request of the Bolivian government, the OAS will in the next few weeks send a mission of electoral observation to certify the process that will end with the elections on December 6th.

"It is nice to confirm that the experiences and work of the OAS are useful and appreciated in Bolivia, as Foreign Minister Choquehuanca told me they are. It will be greatly satisfying for our Organization to be able to continue cooperating with the government and people of Bolivia in this and other issues," said Secretary General Insulza.
