Mexican Fund to Support OAS Strategic Initiatives

  December 15, 2015

The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Government of Mexico today announced the creation of the Mexico Fund at the OAS to increase cooperation the Organization provides to its member states in the framework of its four pillars of strategic action—democracy, human rights, integral development, and multidimensional security.

The Secretary of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, Claudia Ruiz Massieu, asserted that the “Fund is a flexible program, but it is focused on transparency, accountability and results, which reflects the confidence of Mexico in our Organization and acknowledges our recognition of its Secretary General’s leadership.”

For his part, Secretary General Almagro said that this agreement “is a demonstration of the commitment of the Government of Mexico to the strategic direction adopted by the OAS in flagship initiatives with decisive regional support.”

The agreement, signed by Secretary General Almagro and Foreign Minister Ruiz Massieu, will enable the implementation of cooperation actions to be carried out through programs and projects of the OAS General Secretariat, which will be submitted for consideration to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Permanent Mission of Mexico to the OAS.
