THE OAS PROMOTES THE EXCHANGE OF SOCIAL PROTECTION EXPERIENCES BETWEEN CHILE AND THE CARIBBEAN

The Organization of American States (OAS) is hosting a “Social Protection Internship” between the 26th of October and the 3rd of November in Santiago, Chile, with the participation of representatives from various Caribbean countries. The event is a key element of the second phase of the “Puente in the Caribbean Program” that is being jointly implemented by the OAS Executive Secretariat for Integral Development (SEDI) in collaboration with the Chilean Solidarity and Social Investment Fund (FOSIS).
The two-year “Puente in the Caribbean Program” is part of a broader cooperation initiative in support of the Caribbean region. It seeks to strengthen social protection strategies in the region by sharing best practices of the Chilean program, which has been recognized for its success in helping reduce poverty in the country.
To this end, the Internship will bring together social protection agents from Barbados, Jamaica, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago. The primary objective is to share in a systematic manner, the knowledge, procedures and experiences of the Chile Puente Program. The ten-day capacity-building activity will involve lectures, discussions with program implementers and small group workshops. Additionally, participants will visit communities, organizations and families in nearby regions that have benefited from the program.
Through activities such as this Internship, the “Puente in the Caribbean Program” contributes directly to the goals of the OAS Inter-American Social Protection Network (IASPN) that was recently launched in New York City and that constitutes a new alliance of countries in the hemisphere to facilitate the exchange of ideas, policies, experiences and programs to combat social injustice in the region.
