STATEMENT OF THE OAS SECRETARY GENERAL ABOUT THE MURDER OF BENAZIR BHUTTO

  December 28, 2007

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, strongly condemns the murder of Pakistan’s former Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto. He joins those who demand an international investigation about the circumstances surrounding this heinous crime.

“The Organization of American States condemns this terrorist act, which took place shortly before a decisive election for the future of Pakistan, and demands its clarification,” said Insulza. “The best way to restate the confidence needed to advance the democratic process is to trust this investigation to a special commission that will guarantee impartiality to those affected,” he added.

On behalf of all Member States, Insulza sends his condolences to Benazir Bhutto’s family. The Secretary General also condemns the violence that has ensued, and expresses his solidarity to the people of Pakistan in its fight for peace and democracy, which he deems crucial for the peace of the region and the world.
