OAS ASSISTANT SECRETARY GENERAL VISITS EL SALVADOR

  August 26, 2008

Organization of American States (OAS) Assistant Secretary General, Albert Ramdin, yesterday began an official two-day visit to the Central American nation of El Salvador, where he met with top Salvadorian government officials and key business partners, in an effort to advance the Organization’s inter-American agenda.

Assistant Secretary General Ramdin held bi-lateral meetings with El Salvador’s President Elías Antonio Saca Gónzales and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Marisol Argueta Barillas. He also met with the Secretary General of the Central American Integration System (known by its Spanish acronym SICA), Dr. Anibal Quiñonez, to study current cooperation between both institutions, discuss future joint OAS-SICA activities and expand their relationship.

In addition, Ramdin met with Hernando Suárez and Joaquín Rivas, of the Banco Agrícola; Carmen Aída Muñoz, Executive Director of AmCham; and María Eugenia Brizuela de Avila, President of HSBC El Salvador.

On Tuesday morning, Assistant Secretary General Ramdin made a presentation to the diplomatic corps, government officials, as well as university faculty and students on “The Relevance of the OAS in a Changing Inter-American System,” in a conference held at the Sheraton Presidente Hotel, San Salvador.

Ambassador Ramdin’s busy schedule will include a visit, later today, to the Centro Alternativo de Jóvenes Infractores, a youth outreach facility in Ilobasco that includes a Training and Certification Program for Drug Abuse and Violence Prevention sponsored by the OAS Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD).
