OAS SECRETARY GENERAL EXPRESSES SATISFACTION WITH ANNOUNCEMENT MADE BY ECUADOR AND COLOMBIA

  September 25, 2009

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, expressed his satisfaction with the agreement announced Thursday in New York by the Ministers of Foreign Relations of Colombia and Ecuador and with the start of a process of direct dialogue between both nations.

“This agreement represents a momentous and very encouraging step forward in the bilateral relations between Ecuador and Colombia. We hope that this is the first step towards the total normalization of diplomatic ties between the two sister nations,” Mr. Insulza said.

Secretary General Insulza committed his personal efforts and those of the Organization to the task, and expressed that “the OAS will continue making, as it has done so far, all necessary efforts to contribute to this process”.

He also affirmed that “the Organization will immediately begin the facilitating task requested by both Foreign Ministers, particularly regarding the forming of working committees focused on issues such as security and crime control, border development and other sensitive considerations.”

The 25th Meeting of Consultation of Ministers of Foreign Affairs held at the Organization of American States in Washington on March 17, 2008, instructed Secretary General Insulza “to use his good offices to implement a mechanism to restore a climate of confidence between Ecuador and Colombia.”
