OAS Secretary General Meets with President of Colombia
August 25, 2010
The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today met with the President of Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos, with whom he spoke about the main issues in the region and the areas in which the Colombian government and the regional organization work jointly.
President Santos, during a meeting held in the Palacio de Nariño, thanked Secretary General Insulza for the support his country has received through the OAS Mission to Support the Peace Process in Colombia (MAPP/OEA), and requested that the mandate defining the tasks of the MAPP/OEA in the South American country be renewed and broadened.
During the meeting, the Colombian leader praised the role of the OAS as a traditional place for inter-American dialogue, and supported the work of the Secretary General in the search for solutions to the conflicts faced by some countries in the region.
The head of the regional organization and President Santos, along with the Colombian Minister of Foreign Affairs, María Ángela Holguín, and the OAS Secretary for Political Affairs, Víctor Rico, at length analyzed the situation of human rights and rising crime in the region. In general, the two leaders agreed on the need to look for joint solutions through the hemispheric organization.
The Summit of the Americas 2012, to be held in Colombia, also was a main subject of their exchange, and President Santos asked Secretary General Insulza for support in identifying and developing the central theme of the continental meeting.
Afterwards, Secretary General Insulza was received by the President of the Colombian Senate, Armando Benedetti, at Congress headquarters. Upon his arrival in Bogotá, the regional representative was received by the Vice President of Colombia, Angelino Garzón, with whom the MAPP/OEA will develop a work agenda on human rights.
