OAS Secretary General Celebrates the Finding of 33 Chilean Miners Alive

  August 23, 2010

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today celebrated the finding of 33 Chilean miners alive in the San José mine in the Atacama region, victims who remain underground after a subterranean collapse 18 days ago.

On the success of the operation to find the trapped miners, the topmost representative of the hemispheric organization congratulated “all Chileans, the Government, technical workers and especially the miners and their families for their efforts, solidarity, and the wholeheartedness with which they have faced the tragedy that the entire country has lived and continues to live.”

Secretary General Insulza, who was traveling yesterday but followed the news closely, added that “once again the country has projected an image of unity, strength and optimism, one with which Chileans can identify and feel proud of. I hope this spirit, which I join wholeheartedly, will continue to prevail in our society during the intense weeks ahead.”
