STATEMENT OF THE OAS SECRETARY GENERAL AFTER MEETING THE EC DEPUTY DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF THE DIRECTORATE-GENERAL FOR EXTERNAL RELATIONS

  September 17, 2009

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, met Thursday with the Deputy Director-General of the Directorate-General for External Relations of the European Commission, Amb. Stefano Sannino. In the meeting they explored ways to strengthen co-operation between the two organizations, and spoke about the recent measures taken by the European Commission regarding the situation in Honduras, among other issues. After the meeting, Secretary General Insulza said:

“The meeting with Amb. Sannino was very productive. I am pleased that we are advancing in our conversations towards the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding to better regulate and strengthen the relationship between the European Union and the OAS, to allow us to develop more systemic programs of co-operation on common issues of interest such as multidimensional security, governance or the war against drugs. It was also very positive to have shared similar opinions regarding the situation in Honduras, and in general to confirm that the relationship between the two organizations is healthy and constructive.”
