OAS SECRETARY GENERAL EXPRESSED SATISFACTION WITH PROGRESS ON ROSENBERG CASE IN GUATEMALA
September 14, 2009
The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, expressed satisfaction with the apprehension last week of the alleged material perpetrators of the murder of Mr. Rodrigo Rosenberg in Guatemala.
“The OAS supports and congratulates the work of the Public Ministry and of the International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG), chaired by Mr. Carlos Castresana, for successfully taking such an important step forward in the clearing up of this case. This effort, without any doubt, contributes to the strengthening of the Rule of Law in Guatemala,” the Secretary General stated.
The Secretary General also acknowledged, as has the Permanent Council, the commitment of the Government of Guatemala to investigate and clarify the facts, to defend the law, avoid impunity and to ensure the effective implementation of constitutional guarantees and the full stability of democratic institutions.
Reiterating what the General Assembly resolved in support of democratic governance and institutionality in Guatemala, Insulza emphasized his “support for the Government and the people of Guatemala in their efforts to strengthen the Rule of Law and preserve democratic institutionality,” as well as his commitment to support “institutional life and a state of lawfulness in Guatemala.”
Finally, the Secretary General expressed his desire for the murder of Mr. Rodrigo Rosenberg to be fully cleared up soon, and for the material as well as the intellectual perpetrators of this crime to be found, tried and sentenced.
