  September 10, 2009

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, received today a formal request from the Presidency of the National Electoral Court of Bolivia to send an Electoral Observation Mission to monitor the upcoming General Elections and the Autonomy Referendum scheduled to take place on Sunday, December 6th, 2009.

The request was transmitted today through an official letter sent to the OAS Secretary General by the Permanent Representative of Bolivia to the OAS, Ambassador Jose Enrique Pinelo Navarro. In the missive, the Bolivian diplomatic highlighted the importance of the elections, recalling that those will be the first to be held after the promulgation of the New Political Constitution of the State, approved by Referendum at the beginning of 2009.

The OAS Secretary General has given a positive answer to the request presented by the Government of Bolivia. “The Organization of American States will attend this important civic event. We will maintain our commitment in favor of the consolidation of Bolivian democracy, as we have been doing in recent years, when the OAS has witnessed the growth of the institutional process in this country,” affirmed the leader of the hemispheric institution.
