OAS SECRETARY GENERAL PARTICIPATES IN XVII IBERO-AMERICAN SUMMIT

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, participated last night in the opening ceremony of the XVII taking place in Santiago, Chile, which will focus on the issue of social cohesion. Together with King Juan Carlos of Spain, Chilean President Michelle Bachelet and twenty-two heads of State and Government, Insulza partook in the ceremony in which Bachelet inaugurated the event that brings together leaders of Latin America, Spain and Portugal.

The first session of the meeting will take place today, where the leaders will provide their vision on the mechanisms that should be carried out for societies to be more inclusive and for the reduction of marginalization of social and economically weaker sectors.

Within the framework of this meeting, Insulza met with Guatemalan President-Elect Alvaro Colom, who thanked him for the OAS Electoral Observation Mission which accompanied the Guatemalan nation’s electoral process that concluded last Sunday.

Prior to the XVII Ibero-American Summit, Secretary General Insulza participated in a seminar of the Organization for Cooperation and Economic Development on Economic Perspectives for Latin America, where a report on the economy of Latin America was presented.
