OAS Assistant Secretary General Assumes Office for Second Term with Commitment to “People, Peace and Prosperity”
July 19, 2010
The Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Ambassador Albert Ramdin, has officially begun his second term in office, pledging his commitment to “people, peace and prosperity” in the Americas.
Ambassador Ramdin, a Surinamese-born diplomat, was reelected to office by acclamation on March 24, 2010. He has served as Assistant Secretary General since July 2005.
In his inaugural speech to government officials, diplomats and special guests from across the Americas, Ramdin renewed his commitment to facilitating a united hemisphere during his second term. “The OAS must remain a unique vehicle for resolving differences and building consensus. I believe that we should engage proactively, employing peace-building efforts and quiet diplomacy as effective tools for assisting member states to resolve disputes before they evolve into larger conflicts,” Ramdin said.
The Assistant Secretary General also pledged to work harder to facilitate equity in the region, saying that “there are still peoples in the Americas who are not yet benefitting from what this institution can offer. I believe that every effort should be made to ensure that all Member States and all the people of the Americas benefit from being part of this hemispheric family.”
Ambassador Ramdin, who served as Chairman of the Haiti Task Force and the Haiti Group of Friends during his first term in office, also called on the international community to remain committed to the country, and to make good on pledges, following the January 12th earthquake.
During his second term, Ambassador Ramdin has indicated his intention to also focus on strengthening the democratic process in the hemisphere; work with governments to improve regional security, and place equal emphasis on dialogue, action and results, in all undertakings.
Ambassador Ramdin’s inauguration to a second term as Assistant Secretary General was held during a Special Session of the Permanent Council on Monday, July 19, 2010, at the historic Hall of the Americas at OAS headquarters in Washington, DC.
