  June 19, 2014

The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) of Costa Rica launched an international workshop in San Jose on the implementation of ISO Electoral Norm 17582. This event, which will go until tomorrow (Friday), gathers representatives from 31 institutions, including electoral authorities, international organizations, and accrediting/certifying electoral bodies of the Americas.

During the inauguration ceremony, the Chief of the Technical Cooperation section of the OAS’ Department of Electoral Cooperation and Observation (DECO), María Teresa Mellenkamp, stressed that the certification regarding the new ISO electoral norm will allow electoral bodies to address the biggest challenges of organizing elections. Mellenkamp stated that “the ISO norm gives electoral bodies a tool that facilitates development that is more transparent, efficient, and in line with organizational objectives.”

The President of the TSE, Luis Antonio Sobrado, emphasized electoral bodies’ responsibility to organize trustworthy elections and affirmed that “we need to continue with our perpetual effort to improve our electoral practices. To this end, the application of each ISO 17582 clause provides us with an invaluable reference to regulate our processes and implement better standards of operation.”

Commenting on the norm’s importance for the region, the OAS’ Secretary General, José Miguel Insulza, established the creation of the Office for the International Accrediting Body of the norm in DECO. The support for the development and implementation of the ISO electoral norm is another demonstration of the OAS’ commitment to improve one of democracy’s central elements.
