INSULZA CALLS ON COLOMBIA AND ECUADOR TO
RESUME PROCESS OF RAPPROCHEMENT

  June 24, 2008

Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, strongly summoned the Governments of Colombia and Ecuador to resume their commitment to reestablish diplomatic relations without preconditions at the level of chargés d’affaires. Said commitment was scheduled to become effective this week. The Secretary General believes this is the correct way to advance in the recovery of mutual trust and to build a positive cooperation and integration agenda.

Insulza called for a cease of public statements that may create further separation between the countries and a step back in the climate of trust, which had been achieved through the mission of good offices entrusted to the Secretary General by the foreign ministers of the hemisphere.

The Secretary General informed that in the coming days he will be travelling to Quito and Bogotá to meet with high government officials in both countries, in order to resume the dialogue and materialize cooperation mechanisms in the area of security, discussed by the vice-ministers of foreign relations under the auspices of the OAS.
