OAS Secretary General Reiterates Respect for the Constitution of Bolivia

  June 18, 2013

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, expressed his deep regret at articles in some Bolivian media that attempt to show a contradiction between the letter he sent on June 14 to the Government of Bolivia and the letter the OAS Secretary for Political Affairs, Kevin Casas, sent on June 6 to the former President of Bolivia Jorge Quiroga.

"Both communications explicitly declare our respect for the Constitution of the Plurinational State of Bolivia and the decisions issued by the Constitutional Court of that country," said Insulza.

The OAS Secretary General added that "as part of his response to former President Quiroga, Secretary Kevin Casas clearly stated that principle, even saying that this is the behavior that this Organization has always followed and will continue to follow. That is what I confirmed in my reply."

"There has not been any contradiction or behavior outside the normal channels of the OAS and there has been no denial or disavowal; on the contrary, the performance of Kevin Casas has my full support," said Insulza.
