Statement of the OAS Secretary General on the Situation in Guatemala
June 15, 2010
The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, reaffirmed his support for the government of Guatemala in its efforts to combat impunity and praised the unrestricted respect of the authorities for the separation and independence of State powers by addressing and attempting to resolve the crisis caused by the appointment of the Attorney General.
Insulza valued the high level of professionalism and dedication shown by Mr. Carlos Castresana in his duties as head of the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG), and highlighted the firm commitment of the government of President Alvaro Colom and Guatemalan society to the Commission’s work.
The Secretary General believes Mr. Castresana’s successor will be appointed as soon as possible, in order to continue his praiseworthy efforts on such critical issues in the country as justice and security. He also considers it of vital importance to strengthen the achievements so far of the CICIG and confirms the support of the OAS to the Commission’s efforts.
