ISRAELI DONATION GIVES LIFT TO OAS SPECIAL MISSION IN HAITI
December 16, 2004
The Israeli government has given the Organization of American States (OAS) a financial contribution to help the hemispheric organization’s Special Mission for Strengthening Democracy in Haiti.
Israel’s Permanent Observer to the OAS, Ambassador Daniel Ayalon, presented the $20,000 check to Acting Secretary General Luigi Einaudi today, declaring it to be “more than a token contribution. It really is our commitment to keep the friendship, to keep the democratic process throughout this important region, and specifically in Haiti.”
Ayalon touched on the longstanding friendship Israel has enjoyed with the OAS and the Organization’s member nations, adding that this “very special continent,” Latin America, was the first content which recognized Israel en masse after independence in 1948. Israel has been an observer to the OAS for 32 years.
Meanwhile, Ambassador Einaudi thanked the Israeli government, saying the donation would help towards one of the Organization’s most difficult challenges. “The OAS has been involved with Haiti, one of our founding member states, for a long time. As the regional organization we expect to continue to be involved supporting Haiti for a long time to come.”
Recalling Latin American contributions—during World War II—to the survival of many people who later became founders of the state of Israel, Einaudi said “there is no doubt that in the current circumstances, just as Latin America has become an area of relative peace in the world, there is a strong sense and hope that Israel will be at the center of a region of peace itself.”
On hand as well for the ceremony at OAS headquarters was a contingent from the Permanent Mission of Haiti. The Haitian Alternate Representative to the OAS, Jean Ricot Dorméus, expressed appreciation, noting how helpful the Israeli donation will be to the OAS Special Mission that has been doing an important work in the Caribbean nation.
