OAS CONGRATULATES BRAZIL ON ITS ELECTORAL PROCESS

  November 9, 2006

The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) today approved a declaration congratulating the people and government of Brazil for “the conclusion of its electoral process that was carried out within the framework of its democratic institutions.” On October 29, the people of Brazil reelected President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to a four-year term.

The declaration, an initiative of the countries belonging to the Latin American Integration Association, was presented by the Permanent Representative of Colombia to the OAS, Ambassador Camilo Ospina, and adopted by acclamation by the 34 OAS member states.

During the Permanent Council session, chaired by Ambassador Marina Valere of Trinidad and Tobago, representatives from around the region congratulated Brazil for carrying out a democratic, transparent and lawful process.

The Brazilian Ambassador to the OAS, Osmar Chohfi, thanked all the delegations for their expressions of solidarity and noted that the Permanent Council declaration will be received by the government and people of Brazil with appreciation, especially given his country’s bilateral relations with each of the OAS member states. “For my country, the reelection of President Lula da Silva was another example of our commitment to the enduring values of democracy. Through free and fair elections, the people of Brazil exercised their unconditional right to choose their leaders,” said Chohfi.
