OAS: General Secretariat Calls for Respect for Democratic Guarantees and the Free Exercise of Ideas
September 11, 2015
- International Community should have access to the sentence against Leopoldo López
The General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS), in accordance with its legal basis and its pillars, reaffirms its call for the free exercise of ideas and political positions under the rule of law, and for the exercise of democratic guarantees that have been achieved in the region.
Respect for dissent is the bedrock of the strengthening of a democratic culture of civil freedoms and should not be punished with deprivation of liberty, except in proven cases of violation of the constitutional order.
In the case of Leopoldo López, a politician prosecuted within the rule of law, the General Secretariat of the OAS believes it is imperative that the international community be given access to the sentence by which he was convicted.
In this context, the General Secretariat of the OAS expects that the next procedural stage of appeal, which must be carried out within 10 days, be carried out in compliance with the rules of due process and in accordance with national and international human rights standards.
