Paraguay to Host the 44th Regular Session of the OAS General Assembly in 2014

  June 6, 2013

The 44th regular session of the General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) will be held in Asunción, Paraguay, from June 3 to 5, 2014. That decision was taken today, by acclamation, by the representatives of the member states during the final day of the forty-third regular session, in Antigua, Guatemala.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Paraguay, José Félix Fernández Estigarribia, said “I am sure that with the support of all of you and the Organization, the next Assembly session will be a success in terms of the integration of our peoples and the discussion of matters of interest to all.”

The Paraguayan foreign minister read the declaration establishing the venue for the meeting, which explains the offer by the South American country as “a reaffirmation of its commitment to the aims and principles of the OAS Charter” and “a demonstration of its firm decision to continue participating actively in strengthening the Organization.”

On behalf of the Government and people of Paraguay, Minister Fernández expressed thanks for the unanimous decision, saying “this is simply a recognition of an Organization that has always supported the Paraguayan people.”

For his part, the representative of Haiti, Minister Pierre-Richard Casimir, took the floor to express his country's interest in hosting the forty-fifth regular session, to be held in 2015.

Paraguay hosted the twentieth regular session of the OAS General Assembly, in 1990.
