A MAJOR NETHERLANDS CONTRIBUTION FOR OAS PROGRAM IN COLOMBIA

  December 7, 2004

Organization of American States (OAS) initiatives to support the Colombian government’s program to advance the peace process has received a significant financial boost from The Netherlands’ government, in the amount of 953,778.00 Euros.

Ambassador Boudewijn J. van Eenennaam, Permanent Observer of The Netherlands to the OAS, signed with OAS Acting Secretary General Luigi Einaudi the agreement effecting the monetary contribution, which has been made through The Netherlands Ministry of Development Cooperation and is earmarked to implement the OAS-Netherlands cooperation project for the mission to support the peace process in Colombia.

“We believe the OAS Mission in Colombia is doing a very important work,” Ambassador van Eenennaam remarked, adding that the Netherlands fully endorses and supports the current peace process in Colombia, “in the broadest and most flexible manner possible.” He expressed the hope that the OAS Special Mission’s effort would help Colombia bring an end to one of the world’s longest running conflicts, and would help “make a start in breaking the cycle of poverty and conflict.”

Thanking The Netherlands government for its important donation, the Acting Secretary General described the gift as a most timely and courageous contribution that symbolizes the solidarity of the international community with the peace efforts being undertaken by the government of Colombia. He said the donation would help the OAS in its effort to facilitate standards of justice and peace in the South American country.

Ambassador Einaudi praised The Netherlands as a longstanding friend of the Organization, noting that the European nation has donated generously since it gained Permanent Observer status to the OAS in 1972.

Among others on hand for the ceremony, held at OAS headquarters, were María Clara Isaza, Colombia’s Interim Representative to the OAS; John Biehl, Director of the OAS Department of Democratic and Political Affairs; and Sergio Caramagna, Head of the OAS’ Mission to Support the Peace Process in Colombia.
