The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, today concluded a four day visit to Colombia, reaffirming the support of the Organization for the peace process of the government of the country, through the work of the Mission to Support the Peace Process in Colombia (MAPP/OAS).
While in Colombia, from August 21 to 24, the Secretary General met with President Juan Manuel Santos, Foreign Minister María Ángela Holguín, and the Minister of Justice Yesid Reyes, among other officials. In the city of Popayan, Department of Cauca, Almagro also met with victims of the conflict, academics, representatives of afro-descendant groups, indigenous peoples, rural communities, LGBTI groups, business leaders, local authorities and the police.
In addition to the peace process, Almagro and President Santos discussed the need to promote greater Inter-American cooperation to significantly improve the quality of education in the Americas. They also spoke about the drug problem, recalling the study carried out by the OAS in 2013, and the need for the region to arrive at a common position ahead of the global meeting on drugs to be hosted by the United Nations in 2016.
Regarding the peace process, Almagro reiterated that the achievement of a stable and lasting peace requires redoubled efforts on issues such as the re-integration of demobilized combatants, transitional justice and attention to victims affected by the armed conflict, issues monitored by the MAPP/OAS since 2004.
