Secretary General Receives Paraguayan Indigenous Community Representatives

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, received today a delegation of indigenous representatives from Paraguay in his office at the venue for the XLIV General Assembly of the Organization, which is to be inaugurated on Tuesday in Asunción, Paraguay.

During the visit, the first held by the head of the OAS on Paraguayan soil prior to the hemispheric meeting, the indigenous representatives delivered a document describing their situation in the social and political context of the South American country. The document had been agreed on by consensus by the different native communities in the framework of the Human Rights Committee of the National Chamber of Deputies.

The delegation consisted of the National Deputy and Chair of the Human Rights Committee of the Chamber, Olga Ferreira de López; the President of the National Indigenous Institute of Paraguay, Jorge Servín; and indigenous representatives Hipólito Acevei, Angel Vera Sales, Catalino Sosa, Juan Servín, María Luisa Duarte Oneill, and Daniela Benítez de Díaz.
