COMMUNIQUÉ OF THE CHAIR OF THE PERMANENT COUNCIL REGARDING THE BRUTAL TERRORIST ATTACK AGAINST VENEZUELAN PROSECUTOR DANILO ANDERSON

  November 19, 2004

The Chair of the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States, Ambassador Aristides Royo, deplores and vehemently condemns the brutal murder of Venezuelan Prosecuting Attorney Danilo Anderson, who had been conducting investigations into the coup d’état in Venezuela, attacks on embassies, and other acts of a terrorist nature.

The Chair of the Permanent Council points out that the member states of the Organization are committed to cooperating in the fight against terrorism. The murder of Prosecuting Attorney Anderson sets a most serious precedent and both the perpetrators and instigators of this brutal murder must be punished with the full force of Venezuelan law.

In the framework of the United Nations and in that of our Organization, our governments have adopted a series of instruments, in the form of conventions and resolutions, by which we commit ourselves to taking effective steps to prevent terrorist acts. For that reason, the Chair of the Permanent Council urges member states to cooperate with the authorities of our sister nation so that the authors of this grave crime are brought to justice.

The Chair of the Permanent Council offers his condolences to the National Government, Venezuelan democratic institutions, and the people of Venezuela and urges them to continue working to strengthen dialogue, peace, and tolerance.
