HEMISPHERE LEADERS MEET IN LIMA TO DISCUSS A FRAMEWORK FOR AN “ALLIANCE OF THE AMERICAS FOR ENERGY AND CLIMATE”

  June 15, 2009

High national authorities and experts on energy of Latin America and the Caribbean will meet at the Americas Energy and Climate Symposium to be held today and tomorrow in Lima, Peru. The objective of the Lima Symposium is to identify collaborative actions that effectively address the energy and climate challenges affecting the Americas. The authorities and experts invited to participate in this event will also address the formalization of an alliance of the Americas for energy and climate that will promote energy security in the region.

The Lima Symposium follows-up on the dialogue on energy initiated at the Fifth Summit of the Americas held in Trinidad and Tobago in April of this year. On that occasion, the Presidents of the Americas agreed to work together to guarantee energy security, promote alternative energy sources, and act jointly to confront the effects of climate change.

The Americas Energy and Climate Symposium is taking place at a key moment in a region where new opportunities are arising to promote and use alternative energy sources. The event will gather policy makers and private sector energy leaders to discuss cooperation mechanisms on energy efficiency, renewable energy, fossil fuels, energy infrastructure, and energy poverty.

“This Symposium represents a unique effort in shaping a hemispheric energy and climate partnership that will contribute to the enhanced sustainability of the energy sector in the region,” said José Miguel Insulza, Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS).

The Lima Symposium, organized by the Institute of the Americas, is the first step towards hemispheric agreements that will foster change in the field of energy. The Symposium is supported by the Ministry of Energy and Mines of Peru, the governments of Canada and the United States, the Organization of American States, the Latin American Energy Organization and Caribbean Central American Action.
