OAS SECRETARY GENERAL COMMENTS ON EVENTS AT VENEZUELAN TV STATION

  October 3, 2003

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS),Cesar Gaviria, expressed his concern about events at the Globovisión television channel in Caracas, Venezuela.

“We have received information that microwave equipment belonging to Globovisión has been seized by the public authorities, through administrative procedures,” Gaviria stated. “We hope that this situation can be cleared up as soon as possible, so that these actions can in no way be interpreted as obstructing or diminishing freedom of expression. We are confident that in complying with such procedures there will be a respect for the law and also of the principle of freedom of expression, which is in effect all across our hemisphere and which all Venezuelans respect.”
