A GREEK FINANCIAL BOOST FOR OAS PROGRAMS TO FIGHT HUMAN TRAFFICKING AND FOR HEMISPHERIC LECTURE SERIES

  September 12, 2006

Efforts by the Organization of American States (OAS) to combat human trafficking in the hemisphere have received a financial boost, compliments of the government of Greece. Part of the contribution is also earmarked for ongoing Greek support for the Lecture Series of the Americas.
Permanent Observer of Greece to the OAS Ambassador Alexandros Mallias presented a $20,000 contribution to Secretary General José Miguel Insulza today, saying the gift is a tangible expression of his government’s support for OAS initiatives in areas that are also priority issues for Greece in its overall thrust towards the Americas.
Ambassador Mallias explained that this latest contribution is in keeping with his government’s strong support for the organization’s hemispheric agenda that underscores ideals and commitment to promoting cooperation shared by his government.
Thanking the Permanent Observer and his government for the contribution, the Secretary General noted the OAS is gratified by this important demonstration of confidence by permanent observer countries in the organization’s efforts to assist the development process in member states.
Also on hand for the occasion were Assistant Secretary General Albert Ramdin along with senior officials from the OAS Department of Public Security’s section on gangs and the Department of External Relations that manages the Lecture Series. Following the presentation ceremony, the Secretary General and the Greek diplomat exchanged views on a range of hemispheric and international issues of mutual interest.
Greece became a permanent observer with the OAS in 1979.
