IMPROVEMENT OF RURAL LIFE IN THE AMERICAS:
MINISTERIAL COMMITMENT IN GUAYAQUIL

GUAYAQUIL, Ecuador- The hemisphere’s highest agriculture authorities reaffirmed the need to promote state policies and intensify regional and hemispherical cooperation to improve agricultural labor conditions and rural life, during the Third Ministerial Meeting on Agriculture and Rural Life of the Americas.

The ministers adopted the 2006-2007 Hemispherica Agenda, which affirmed their commitment to strengthen local economic development with the support of public and private investment, based on an integrated approach that improves productivity, competitiveness and the business capacity of rural companies, in order to generate employment and improve the quality of life in rural areas.

The Hemispheric Agenda puts forth a shared vision on hemispheric priorities in four areas: market based production; technological innovation in the field; reduction of rural poverty and improvement of income distribution; and the development of human capacity.

In Guayaquil, the 34 ministers of the hemisphere are taking part in the three-day meeting, which takes place every two years within the framework of the Summits of the Americasprocess. They also participated in the XIII Regular Meeting of the Inter-American Board of Agriculture, the highest governing body of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA).

IICA Director Chelston Brathwaite, of Barbados, who was unanimously re-elected for a second four-year term, presented a report on the critical issues that mark the evolution of agriculture in the Americas, the recent achievements of the Institute, and perspectives and challenges. IICA is a specialized body of the Organization of American States (OAS).

The President of Ecuador, Alfredo Palacio, will close the ministerial meeting this afternoon.
