Process of Destruction of Munitions in Disuse Begins in Honduras with OAS Support

The Honduran government this week began the controlled destruction of nearly 70 tons of damaged and excess munitions. Honduras’s Ministry of Defense, with the support of the Program of Assistance for the Control of Arms and Munitions (PACAM) of the Organization of American States (OAS), will oversee destruction operations designed to prevent these munitions from entering illicit markets as well as to improve the security of national arsenals.
In January 2012, the Defense Ministry and the OAS signed a Memorandum of Understanding regarding cooperation and technical assistance for the control and destruction of weapons, ammunition, explosives, and other related materials that are under the control of the Armed Forces. Further projects are anticipated within the framework of the memorandum including firearms destruction.
The activities beginning this month are supported in part with funding from the United States Department of State and include technical training in ammunition disposal for a select group of personnel from the Ministry of Defense. At the conclusion of training, personnel will proceed to destroy thousands of munitions of different calibers with a weight of approximately 70 tons. Destruction operations are expected to last just over a month.
Since 2007 the OAS, through PACAM, has been supporting Central American countries in responding to the need for effective control of ammunition, firearms, explosives, and other related materials.
For its Central American munitions destruction projects the PACAM program solicits funds from the international community, mobilizes highly trained personnel along with special equipment, and provides quality assurance as well as certification of all results.
