The Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Albert R. Ramdin, will inaugurate a three-day meeting of the hemisphere’s ministers of agriculture on August 29 in Guayaquil, Ecuador. The Third Ministerial Meeting on Agriculture and Rural Life will focus on the theme ‘Working to reduce poverty, create jobs and promote rural prosperity.”
“The meeting will provide an important opportunity to discuss issues that are central to the inter-American agenda as they relate to sustainable development, job creation and opportunities for the future of rural populations throughout the region, which will contribute significantly to efforts to combat poverty,” Ramdin said.
The President of Ecuador, Alfredo Palacio, will also participate in the opening of the meeting, along with the Director General of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), Dr. Chelston Brathwaite; Ecuador’s Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Pablo Rizzo Pastor; and Guayaquil Mayor Jaime Nebot.
Agriculture ministers from 34 countries will participate in the meeting, which is held every two years as part of the Summits of the Americas process and is being organized with IICA support. IICA is a specialized agency of the inter-American system that supports the efforts of its member states to foster agricultural development and rural well-being.
The agriculture ministers will examine a number of strategic issues for the coming decade, including the potential of agro-biotechnologies and prospects for agro-energy; the alleviation of rural poverty and the promotion of prosperity and job creation in rural areas; and state policies for agriculture and rural life. The agenda has been developed by consensus over the last several months, in preparation for the Fourth Summit of the Americas, which will take place in November in Argentina.
In Guayaquil, delegates from the countries will also participate in the Thirteenth Regular Meeting of the Inter-American Board of Agriculture, IICA’s highest governing body. They will hold elections for the post of IICA Director General for 2006-2010; review the modernization process begun by the Brathwaite administration; make budgetary decisions; and adopt strategies that will guide the institution during the next four years.
