HOMAGE PAID TO ARGENTINEAN HERO JOSE DE SAN MARTIN AT OAS

  August 14, 2003

Argentina’s Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States (OAS), Ambassador Rodolfo Gil, paying homage to General José de San Martín, stressed that the noble values of the Argentine patriot and liberator are still guiding the Argentinean people. August 17 marks 153 years since San Martín’s death.

Ambassador Gil told member state representatives at a Permanent Council meeting on Wednesday that San Martín is recognized as a great hero not only because he possessed certain noble qualities but because he was able to instill those values into the consciousness of succeeding generations.

The Ambassador said Argentineans exhibited San Martín’s greatness during one of Argentina’s most devastating crises since independence—the crisis that began in December 2001. “During those tragic events, as we struggled to rise again from the damaged building—a republic in crisis—San Martin’s greatness emerged,” stated Gil, adding that the hero’s greatness “demonstrates why he is the father of the Argentinean nation. His greatness lies in the values he imparted to us.”

By taking responsibility for “the chaos we helped to bring about,” Argentineans also demonstrate San Martín’s humility, Ambassador Gil said, explaining the spirit in which Argentineans took it upon themselves to bear the burden of rebuilding their nation after the crisis.

“The Argentinean people is standing and is moving forward, guided by the immortal example of the Liberator and General, José de San Martín,” declared Ambassador Gil.

The Permanent Council’s Chairman, Haiti’s Ambassador Raymond Valcin, thanked the Argentinean Ambassador and the Argentinean government for the historic commemoration, noting it would help keep alive the memory of one of the great heroes of the Americas. He also acknowledged the presence of Dr. Cristián García Godoy, a former OAS official who is now president of the San Martín Society of the United States.
