OAS SECRETARY GENERAL MET WITH THE SECRETARY OF INTERIOR OF THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
April 28, 2009
The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, met today at the OAS headquarters in Washington D.C., with the Secretary of the Interior and Police of the Dominican Republic, Franklin Almeyda, to discuss economic and security-related issues in the Americas. This meeting took place in the framework of the preparations for the II Meeting of Ministers Responsible for Public Security in the Americas, that will take place in the Dominican Republic at the end of the year.
During the meeting with Minister Almeyda, the Secretary General underscored the importance of the issue of security for the region, and the link to the global financial crisis. Likewise, he presented his views on the impact that the crisis will have on many countries of the hemisphere and the resources available for governments to face it.
On the other hand, Secretary Almeyda extended an invitation to the OAS leader to attend an international conference entitled: “Migration Policies and Experiences in Regularization Processes”, organized by the National Council of Migration of that country. This event will be attended by experts from more that forty countries, who will formulate recommendations for the definition of a national migratory policy.
Other issues discussed included: the threat posed by the swine flu outbreak in the region, the results of the Fifth Summit of the Americas, the cooperation with other hemispheric institutions, as well as the efforts carried out by the Government of the Dominican Republic on the areas of security and crime.
Following up on a proposal by the OAS Secretary General, in April 2008 the OAS Permanent Council convened the First Inter-American Meeting of Ministers Responsible for Public Security (MISPA) that gathered the national authorities on security matters on October 7-8, 2008, in Mexico City. On that opportunity, it was agreed that the Second meeting would take place in the Dominican Republic.
The OAS, through the Department of Public Security (DPS) supports the preparatory process of this Ministerial meeting with the participation of the institutions of the inter-American system, international and sub regional development agencies, academics, and civil society organizations.
