ASSISTANT SECRETARY GENERAL RAMDIN IN MEDELLIN TO FINALIZE OAS GENERAL ASSEMBLY PREPARATIONS
April 15, 2008
Assistant Secretary General Albert R. Ramdin arrives today in Medellin, Colombia, as part of his continued engagement with the government of Colombia, host of the Organization of American States (OAS) annual General Assembly this year, in the city of Medellin from June 1-3. The 34 member states' foreign affairs ministers will meet for the General Assembly, under theme of “Youth and Democratic Values."
During his two-day visit Ambassador Ramdin will hold a series of meetings, including with high level Colombian officials. Prior to leaving for Colombia, Ambassador Ramdin said he anticipated “a successful mission to discuss final preparations of the 38th OAS General Assembly, and that he believes in the importance of ensuring that each General Assembly is substantive and attractive in content and format, to guarantee attendance of all hemispheric Foreign Ministers for whom this is the only collective encounter at the hemispheric level.”
Ambassador Ramdin also stated that this year’s OAS General Assembly has special significance because it will be the only opportunity for Foreign Ministers of the Hemisphere to meet ahead of the next Summit of the Americas, which is to be held in April of next year in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.
