  March 27, 2014

The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Judicial Power of Uruguay held this week in Montevideo the Third High-Level Meeting on the Role of the Judiciary in International Commercial Arbitration so that experts from Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Venezuela may share their knowledge and experience on this matter.

The OAS, through its Department of International Law, co-organized the event held to foster the sharing of expertise, experiences and best practices on the key aspects of international commercial arbitration, such as the existence of the arbitration agreement, the composition of the arbitration tribunal, and the recognition and enforcement of foreign arbitral awards.

The meeting was attended by 45 ministers, high-level magistrates and judges, leading academics and experts from Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela.

The Third High-Level Meeting on the Role of the Judiciary in International Commercial Arbitration was inaugurated by Nilza Salvo López de Alda, Minister of the Civil Court of Appeals and Director of the Center for Judicial Studies of Uruguay; the Ambassador of Canada to Uruguay, Claire Poulin; and the OAS Secretary for Legal Affairs, Jean Michel Arrighi. In addition, the former Foreign Minister of Uruguay, Didier Opertti, delivered a keynote address.

The event included panels of national and international experts, reflections on progress made on the matter in each of the participating states, as well as discussions and evaluations during workshops in which participants had the opportunity to interact and collaborate with their peers.

The Third Meeting took place after those held in Santiago, Chile, and San José, Costa Rica. The initiative is part of a project sponsored by the Government of Canada and implemented by the OAS Department of International Law.
