OAS Electoral Observation Mission in Brazil Begins Work ahead of November 15 Municipal Elections
November 9, 2020
The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Brazil will begin its work today ahead of the November 15 municipal elections in which 5,568 mayors (prefectos) and deputy mayors (vice prefectos) will be elected, as well as 57,942 councilors (vereadores).
The Mission is headed by the Uruguayan Ambassador Agustín Espinosa and is made up of fourteen experts and observers of 9 nationalities who, due to the global health context, will combine a face-to-face and virtual scheme to analyze issues related to electoral organization and technology, electoral justice, political participation of women, indigenous and Afro-descendant groups, and political-electoral financing.
In Brazil, the Mission will have a presence in the cities of Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia, Goiânia and Valparaíso, and will hold meetings with electoral authorities, government officials, representatives of the different political forces and civil society actors, always with a strict observance of health protocols to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
This is the second OAS Electoral Observation Mission in Brazil, and it is possible thanks to contributions from Canada, the United States, France, Guatemala, and the Dominican Republic. In the days after the election, the Mission will present a preliminary report with its observations and recommendations in order to contribute to the strengthening of the electoral processes in Brazil.
