OAS Electoral Observation Mission Conducts Observation Tasks ahead of November 28 Elections in Honduras

The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Honduras is present in the country to carry out the tasks of observation for the general elections on November 28.
Made up of 91 specialists and observers of 22 different nationalities who will be deployed in 17 of the 18 departments of the country, the Mission arrived in stages beginning on November 12. The Chief of the Mission, the former President of Costa Rica, Luis Guillermo Solís, will arrive in the country on Tuesday, November 23.
The Mission was present at the simulation of the Preliminary Electoral Results Transmission System (TREP) on November 16 and in the coming days will continue to hold meetings with electoral and government authorities, candidates, political leaders, representatives of civil society and other relevant actors to follow up on aspects related to electoral organization and technology, the political participation of women, electoral justice, voting abroad, campaigns and freedom of expression, and political financing.
The Mission reiterates its concern over the acts of violence that have taken place in the context of this electoral process and urges all political actors and citizens to contribute to creating an environment of peace, which will allow Hondurans to freely express their will through the vote. In addition, it welcomes the initiatives promoted by electoral authorities and civil society that aim to generate a civility pact and the holding of peaceful elections.
After the elections, the Mission will present a preliminary report with its observations and recommendations in order to contribute to the strengthening of electoral processes in Honduras.
This Mission marks the twelfth time that the OAS has observed an electoral process in Honduras, and it is possible thanks to the contributions of Canada, Spain, the United States, France, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Peru, the Dominican Republic, and Switzerland.
