OAS Secretary General Commemorates Human Rights Day

  December 10, 2011

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today joined the celebration of Human Rights Day, in commemoration of the signing of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, with a call to peoples and Governments to renew and deepen their commitment with the respect and protection of these inalienable principles.

“Sixty-three years ago Humanity marked a milestone in its development, with a compendium of rights of a civil, political, social, economic and cultural character that are recognized universally. That historic document has guided a fight as tough as it is permanent, throughout the world, to make progress on the search for social wellbeing and respect for the basic rights of human beings,” he said.

The head of the hemispheric organization acknowledged that “there has been progress on these objectives, how could we not recognize it, nevertheless, there are still many challenges to overcome, and today’s date must serve to renew our commitment and redouble our efforts in the defense of human rights.”

Secretary General Insulza recalled that the OAS, as the head of the Inter-American System, “was born and grew while guided by the respect, defense and protection of human rights as its spinal cord,” and he recalled also that the American Declaration of the Rights and Duties of Man was signed six months before the United Nations Declaration.

He placed emphasis on the importance of the Inter-American System of Human Rights and particularly on the contributions of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, to the promotion of the foundational principles, the perfecting of juridical mechanisms, as well as the creation of a culture on these values, that envelops the peoples of the continent. “The OAS is proud to be a pioneer on this matter and every day, in the light of dialogue and debate, renews its commitment to continue preventing, avoiding and punishing violations of human rights, wherever they occur,” he added.

Finally, the head of the OAS highlighted the work developed in the last few months by the member countries, which constituted a reflection group for the purpose of strengthening a system that is prestigious to the regional organization.
