OAS HAILS EL SALVADOR-HONDURAS DEMARCATION AGREEMENT

  April 19, 2006

Hailing the agreement signed by El Salvador and Honduras in the Salvadoran capital, the Organization of American States (OAS) says it is an important expression of two nations’ commitment to fostering and expanding ties between their citizens.

Assistant Secretary General Albert R. Ramdin, who was in San Salvador to witness yesterday’s signing on behalf of the OAS, said the agreement was a recognition of dialogue and exchange of ideas as indispensable mechanisms for deepening relations between nations. He expressed confidence this demarcation agreement would advance economic and cultural ties as well as friendly relations between the two Central American nations.

“Border problems involving OAS countries are, without a doubt, among the biggest obstacles to developing our economies and markets, enhancing cultural relations and opening up the movement and training of people,” Ramdin said after the bilateral agreement was signed. He also explained the problems cited also stand in the way of subregional and hemispheric integration. “We must understand that, at the end of the day, a peaceful and negotiated solution benefits us all, and remains the most effective course of action by virtue of the cost of missed opportunities when no negotiated, peaceful settlement can be reached.”

Ramdin pledged continued OAS assistance in this initiative, and cited parallel processes the hemispheric organization has been facilitating, such as its contribution to mechanisms for a peaceful settlement of the territorial dispute between Belize and Guatemala. Ambassador Ramdin also acknowledged the contribution of his predecessor, former Assistant Secretary General Luigi Einaudi, toward the process that culminated with Tuesday’s agreement between El Salvador and Honduras.
