OAS and Government of Paraguay Organize Congress on Cyber Security

The Organization of American States (OAS), the government of Paraguay and the Argentinian Organization of Users of Information and Communications Technology (USUARIA) today organized in Asuncion the twenty-sixth edition of the Ibero-American Information Security Congress and Fair "PARAGUAY SEGURINFO 2013."

The event, organized by the OAS through the Inter-American Committee against Terrorism (CICTE) of the Secretariat for Multidimensional Security, was attended by more than 400 representatives from government, the private sector and civil society, and aimed at generating greater awareness of the importance of strengthening cyber security in Paraguay and in the Americas. The Congress was attended by experts from the host country and from Argentina, Colombia, Spain, the United States, Panama, Portugal and Uruguay, as well as a representative from the Council of Europe. Similarly, private sector representatives from Cybsec, Symantec, ESET and Red Hat were invited to share their experiences and perspectives on threats and trends on communication technologies.

The opening ceremony of the event featured the Minister and Secretary General of the Presidency of Paraguay, Martin Burt; the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Manuel María Cáceres; the Minister and Executive Secretary of Information Technologies (SETICS), Santiago Vazquez; the OAS Representative in Paraguay, Ambassador Diego Paz; and the President of USUARIA, Pedro Maidana, who thanked the OAS for its efforts to strengthen cyber security in the host nation, and invited all attendees to forge partnerships to make Paraguay a more "cyber secure" country.

In his speech, Ambassador Diego Paz reiterated the support of the OAS and of CICTE to all of Paraguay’s cyber security efforts, and stressed the "leading role" that the South American country is playing in the field.

The topics discussed during the conference included the development of public policy and government responses, the importance of coordinated intergovernmental responses, the role of the private sector and civil society, the challenges and international responses to cybercrime, and analysis and trends in internet security.
