OAS Electoral Observation Mission for the Judicial Elections Deploys in Bolivia
December 9, 2024
The Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) of the Organization of American States (OAS) for the December 15 judicial elections in Bolivia began its work in the country in preparation for the elections on Sunday, December 15.
The OAS Mission is headed by former Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression (RELE) of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) of the OAS, Edison Lanza. The Uruguayan lawyer has participated in several observation missions, both as RELE and more recently as part of the Independent Mission to Observe the selection processes of the judicial authorities in Honduras and Peru.
The OAS/EOM is made up of 17 specialists and observers from 10 countries and will analyze issues related to electoral organization and technology; electoral justice; the judiciary, and political participation of women. During its work, the Mission will meet with government representatives, national and departmental electoral authorities, candidates for the four judicial bodies, members of academia and civil society, as well as political leaders, to learn about the electoral process in the country. At the end of its observation, the OAS/EOM will present a preliminary report with its observations and recommendations for strengthening the electoral processes in Bolivia.
This is the third election of Authorities of the Judicial Branch and Plurinational Constitutional Court observed by the OAS, and the twenty-second election that the Organization has observed in Bolivia.
The deployment of the OAS/EOM is possible thanks to the financial contributions of the United States, Korea, the Netherlands and the Dominican Republic.
